Paddling, Poker and Potluck!

by Shelly Hipson

May 4th, 2002, Shelburne, N.S. -  The Ohio Canoe & Poker Rally has grown from a handful of participants to over 70 paddlers, all anxious to test their skills on the back waterways of Shelburne County. Mild rapids, the occasional tip of a canoe, numerous awards and great food all add up to a memorable day in one of the most spectacular wilderness regions in the province.

"The rally is always held the last Saturday in May falling this year on May 25, 2002. Each year we grow a little bit bigger. It really makes for a nice day to spend time with friends, family or to get to meet some new people," says Sterling Bower, contact person for the canoe rally.

Registration is at Lake Deception from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and starts with a paddle across the lake to the mouth of the Roseway River. It is a seven-mile run with five checkpoints that takes four to five hours to complete. Along the way paddlers get to pick a concealed card to make up a poker hand. At the end of the run, cards are unwrapped and the hand is revealed. In order, from the highest hand to the lowest, paddlers are able to choose from a great selection of donated prizes.

The challenging part of this adventure is the shoot or the falls. The shoot is rapid water between two cement walls about four feet apart and 12 feet long and the falls is an eight-foot drop. Brave souls take their chance choosing one or the other; smart souls drag their canoe or kayak along the shore.

Prize donations are made by businesses in the area and last year people were able to choose from a selection of close to 70 items. "We have some interesting awards like the Bad Luck Award for the paddlers who experienced a sudden tip and an Environmental Award for the person who picked up garbage along the way. Our goal is for most of the people participating in the rally to be able to walk away with something," says Twila Demings, one of several people who coordinate the donations.

The entry fee is $10 per person, which includes a potluck at 5 p.m. at the Lower Ohio Hall. A dance follows in the evening, which is opened to participants and invited guests.
