Roller Rally Defies Municipal By-Law!

June 24st, 1998 Liverpool, N. S. - Over 200 skateboarders, rollerbladers, parents, kids and just plain concerned residents of Queens County circled the downtown core of Liverpool yesterday, to the delight of local business people, passing motorists and smiling policemen. rally.JPG (19018 bytes)The 'placard-carrying'  protesters were defying a municipal by-law that prohibits the use of skateboards and rollerblades on public property in the region.

Liverpool teacher and spokeperson for the group, Peter Ripple, explained that despite numerous meetings with members of the regional council little progress had been made in reaching a compromise on the the issue. He said, "It's summer and kids just want to have fun. We are not going to settle this thing in the fall, we want to settle it now!"

The regional council had offered to allow rollerblading and skateboarding on a small area on the waterfront parking lot after business hours and on some sidewalks in the town, but according to Mr. Ripple the suggestion was too restrictive and was not acceptable.

Mr. Ripple added "We want the law rescinded. If they (municipal council) don't act on June 30th (the next meeting of the regional council), then we will formulate our next battle plan."

The Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality, Christopher Clark was unavailable for comment.
